Nachingwea is a town in the Lindi Region of southern Tanzania, inland from the Indian Ocean coast. It sits in fairly level country, and its map shows a spacious town with long roads, wide blocks and plenty of open ground, surrounded by fields and patches of woodland that extend far in every direction.
The town is known for its part in the Tanganyika groundnut scheme of the late 1940s, a large British colonial project to grow peanuts at scale, which chose Nachingwea as one of its main areas. Later, during the liberation struggles of southern Africa, a camp near the town trained fighters of Mozambique's FRELIMO movement.
