Ningde lies in north-eastern Fujian, on a stretch of coast where mountains come almost to the water's edge. The city's streets fill the narrow flat land between hills and sea, and newer districts have been built on reclaimed land and along the valleys, so the map shows development threading between slopes rather than spreading freely. The largest of these inlets, Sandu'ao Bay, is a deep, sheltered natural harbour known for its farming of large yellow croaker.
