North Chicago sits in Lake County, Illinois, along the western shore of Lake Michigan between Waukegan and Lake Bluff. Despite the name, it is a separate city well to the north of Chicago itself. Its map combines a straight inland grid, a broad industrial belt along the rail lines and a long shoreline that forms a clean edge to the east.
Much of the lakefront is occupied by Naval Station Great Lakes, home to the Navy's only boot camp, where recruits train on a base of streets, drill fields and buildings arranged in careful blocks.
