Nuevitas stands on the north coast of Camagüey province, on the shore of a large, almost enclosed bay. That bay is the main feature of the map. A wide body of water connects to the Atlantic only through a narrow channel, and headlands and mangrove edges curve around it. The town sits along the shore in a modest grid of streets that runs down to the waterfront.
The sheltered water made Nuevitas a working port, and the town has developed industry along the coast, including cement production and a power station. Small islets called Los Ballenatos lie in the bay near town. Beyond the shoreline, the land opens into flat country and scrub typical of this part of Camagüey.
