Pápa lies in Veszprém county, between the Bakony hills and the Little Hungarian Plain. Its historic centre is compact. Streets curve around the main square, which is dominated on one side by the large baroque parish church and on the other by the Esterházy Castle and its park. Beyond the old town, the grid becomes more regular and suburban.
The town has long been a centre of education and religion. Its Reformed College dates back to the sixteenth century and has been one of Hungary's best-known Protestant schools.
