Penticton lies in the southern Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, on the neck of land between Okanagan Lake to the north and Skaha Lake to the south. Few cities have a clearer outline from above. Water frames the city at both ends, and dry, steep hills rise on either side of the valley.
The two lakes are connected by the Okanagan River Channel, a straightened waterway where floating down on inner tubes is a well-loved summer tradition. On the Okanagan Lake shore, the restored sternwheeler SS Sicamous is beached as a museum. It recalls the time when lake steamers were the main link through the valley.
