Petare stands at the eastern end of the Caracas valley, where the valley floor narrows and the Guaire River flows on toward the east. The city belongs to the Sucre municipality of Miranda state, yet on a map it runs directly into the capital, its streets continuous with the eastern districts of Caracas.
At its heart is a colonial historic centre, a compact grid around a plaza and church that predates much of modern Caracas.
