Poitiers sits on a steep-sided plateau in western France, a promontory almost encircled by the Clain and its tributary, the Boivre. The effect on a map is striking. The medieval centre is full of churches, squares and winding lanes. Notre-Dame-la-Grande, with its richly carved Romanesque facade, stands near the old market square, and the Baptistère Saint-Jean is among the oldest Christian buildings in France. The Palais de Justice, once the palace of the Counts of Poitou and Dukes of Aquitaine, is close by at the heart of the plateau.
Poitiers gave its name to two famous battles, including the one fought nearby in 732, and its university, founded in 1431, is one of the oldest in France.
