Port Hedland lies on the Pilbara coast of Western Australia, and on a map it is one of the most unusual towns in the country. The old town sits on a narrow strip of land between the Indian Ocean and a maze of tidal creeks and mangroves, connected to the mainland by a causeway. South Hedland lies inland.
It is one of the largest bulk export ports in the world by tonnage, handling iron ore that arrives from inland mines on very long trains.
