Prešov is one of the largest cities in Slovakia and the centre of the country's east. Its historic core is instantly recognisable from above: the main street widens into a long, spindle-shaped square lined with burgher houses and churches, including the Gothic Co-Cathedral of St Nicholas standing in its middle.
The Torysa River runs along the eastern side of the old town, and the city has spread outward in all directions, with housing estates, industrial zones and roads following the valley. To the southeast lies Solivar, where salt was mined and processed for centuries, and whose historic works are now a technical monument.
