Recife takes its name from the reef that runs parallel to the coast and shelters the harbour, and on a map water shapes almost everything. A series of bridges joins the districts of Recife Antigo, Santo Antônio and São José to each other and to the mainland.

To the south a long, straight coastline runs past Boa Viagem, its beach avenue lined with tall buildings. To the north the old town of Olinda sits on its hill, almost joined to Recife by continuous streets.
