Remedios, in Villa Clara province near Cuba's north coast, is one of the oldest towns founded by the Spanish on the island. From above, the colonial centre is compact and tightly organised. Streets meet at the main plaza, where the historic churches stand, and the blocks around it keep the scale of an early settlement.
The town is best known for its parrandas, a Christmas season festival where rival neighbourhoods compete with elaborate floats, lights and fireworks.
