Resistencia, the capital of Chaco province, stands on the low plain west of the Paraná River, across from the city of Corrientes. Its plan is a textbook Argentine grid centred on a large main square, Plaza 25 de Mayo. The land beneath it is far less orderly. The Negro River and a scatter of lagoons and old meanders wind through the blocks, interrupting streets and forming irregular green spaces.
Resistencia is known as the city of sculptures. Hundreds of works stand along its pavements, squares and boulevards, many of them created during the international sculpture biennial held in the city. To the east, the General Belgrano Bridge crosses the Paraná to Corrientes, linking the two provincial capitals across one of South America's great rivers.
A Resistencia map poster makes the most of this tension between plan and water. Old river channels and lagoons are scattered through the urban area. They appear as curving pale shapes that break the chessboard of streets in several places.

To the east the city dissolves into wetlands and river channels before the Paraná itself, crossed by the long bridge to Corrientes.
