The town lies on the edge of the mountains, so its map shows two kinds of terrain: steep, folded ground on one side and the start of open, flat country on the other.
The town has long been associated with salt. Salt deposits in the surrounding hills were worked for generations and shaped its early economy, and the town still refers to that past.
