Rhenen sits at the point where the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a low glacial ridge, meets the Nederrijn. On a map, this is one of the rare places in the Netherlands where terrain clearly shapes the town. The compact old centre lies against the river, wooded slopes rise behind it, and flat floodplains stretch away on the opposite bank.

In the centre, the tall Cuneratoren, the tower of St. Cunera's Church, has long been a landmark visible across the river landscape.
