Rietberg lies in the Gütersloh district of North Rhine-Westphalia, on flat land along the upper Ems. On a map the historic core is small and tight, with streets curving around what was once the seat of the counts of Rietberg. The old town is known for its well-preserved half-timbered houses, many with decorated gables, which give the centre a coherent historic look. In 2008 Rietberg hosted the North Rhine-Westphalia state garden show, and the grounds became a large park that is still a prominent green area on the edge of the centre.
