Rodez stands on a steep promontory above the valley of the Aveyron River in southern France, and its map makes the site immediately clear. At the centre stands the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, built of red sandstone, with a tall bell tower visible from far around. Rodez is also the birthplace of the painter Pierre Soulages, and a museum dedicated to his work opened here in 2014.
