Rutherford is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, just a few miles west of Manhattan. On a map it is a compact, mostly residential area, with a street grid that turns slightly to follow the land. The Passaic River runs along its western edge, and to the east the streets end at the wetlands and highways of the Meadowlands. Park Avenue, the main commercial street, runs through the centre near the railroad station.
The town is closely associated with the poet William Carlos Williams, who was born here, lived here throughout his life and practised as a doctor in the area. His house still stands in the borough. Rutherford developed as a commuter town along the railroad to Hoboken and New York, and its older streets of large houses and mature trees reflect that suburban origin.
