Saint-Fons lies immediately south of Lyon, on the eastern side of the Rhône. The map is shaped by infrastructure. The town is at the heart of what the Lyon area calls the Vallée de la chimie, the chemical valley, a long strip of chemical and industrial plants that runs along the Rhône south of the city.
