From above, Sambir sits close to the upper Dniester, where the river winds through a broad, flat valley before the land starts rising toward the Carpathians. The town's streets gather around a historic market square, and the blocks nearest it are small and irregular. Further out, the pattern loosens into wider residential streets, gardens and field edges.
