Sangju lies in the northwest of Gyeongsangbuk-do, in a broad basin surrounded by low mountains. The city centre is small and compact, with a regular pattern of streets. The Nakdong River, the longest river in South Korea, runs along the eastern part of the municipality. It meanders through wide floodplains, with weirs and river parks along its banks.
