Sapucaia lies in the north of Rio de Janeiro state, on the Paraíba do Sul river, which forms the border with Minas Gerais here. The town follows the valley. Its streets line the riverbank and fill the narrow flat ground between the water and the steep green hills of the Serra do Mar hinterland.
