Selva Alegre, officially Alto Selva Alegre, is a district of Arequipa in southern Peru. It lies north of the historic centre, on land that rises from the valley of the Chili River toward the lower slopes of El Misti. From above, its streets climb steadily uphill, block after block, until the houses give way to the dry, bare ground of the volcano.
The river valley on the western side forms a green strip of fields and trees, in contrast with the densely built district. Streets run up and down the slope or follow its contours, and on the map they form a pattern that changes as the ground gets steeper. Ravines coming down from the volcano break up the grid in several places.
Arequipa is known as the White City for the pale volcanic stone called sillar used in its historic buildings, and El Misti rises high above the whole city. A Selva Alegre map poster shows one of the neighbourhoods climbing toward that famous cone.
