Serchhīp is the headquarters of Serchhip district in central Mizoram, in the hill country of northeast India. The town is built along ridges, and its map shows it: roads follow the lie of the land, curving around slopes and doubling back where the ground falls away. Buildings line these routes in narrow bands instead of filling a flat grid.
The district is widely noted for its very high literacy rate, among the highest recorded in India. From above, though, the terrain is what stands out.
