Serekunda is the largest urban area in the Gambia, lying on the mainland southwest of the capital, Banjul, within the Kanifing municipality. On a map it appears as a broad, densely built area of residential compounds, small streets and markets, stretching from the Atlantic coastal districts inland toward the countryside.
Unlike many planned cities, Serekunda grew from a cluster of villages that merged as the population rose, and its street pattern shows it.
