From above, the river is the defining feature: a broad band along the town's edge, with the dense built area pressed close to it. The town has a place in history: in July 1798 the Battle of Shubra Khit was fought nearby, one of the first clashes between Napoleon's army and Mamluk forces during the French campaign in Egypt.
