Shwegu sits on the Irrawaddy in Myanmar's Kachin State, downstream of Bhamo. The river is the dominant feature on any map of the area. It is wide and slow, split by sandbanks and islands that shift with the seasons. The town lines the bank in a narrow strip, with its streets running parallel to the water and short lanes leading down to the shore.
Behind the riverside, the settlement quickly gives way to fields, villages and low wooded land, so the built area stays compact.
