Shwegyin lies in the eastern part of Myanmar's Bago Region, on the Sittaung river. The Shwegyin river, which comes down from the hills to the east, joins the Sittaung near the town. On the map, the two waterways set the frame, and a small grid of streets sits on the low ground beside them.
The name Shwegyin is associated with gold, and the area has a long tradition of gold working in its rivers. The surrounding land is a mix of rice fields on the plain and forested hills rising toward the Karen State border. Roads and waterways have long linked the town with the wider Sittaung valley.
