Sinzig lies on the left bank of the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate, where the river Ahr flows out of its narrow wine valley and joins the Rhine. On a map, the two rivers set the scene. The broad Rhine sweeps past to the east, and the Ahr winds in from the west across a flat, wooded floodplain before it meets the main stream.
The historic centre sits on slightly higher ground, a tight oval of old streets around the late Romanesque parish church of St. Peter, whose towers are a familiar sight from the valley.
