Smethwick lies in Sandwell, on the western edge of Birmingham, and its map is a record of the Industrial Revolution. The Birmingham Canal runs through it on two levels, Brindley's older route and Telford's later cutting. Railway lines run beside them, and the M5 skirts the western side.
Galton Bridge, built by Thomas Telford in 1829, spans the deep cutting in a single cast-iron arch. Nearby stood the Soho Foundry of Boulton and Watt, where steam engines were built. Today Smethwick is also known for its diverse communities and its busy high streets, including the long run of shops on Soho Road.
