Sobue lies on the Nōbi Plain in western Aichi Prefecture, not far from the Kiso River and the border with Gifu. It was an independent town until it merged into the city of Inazawa. The land is almost completely flat. On a map, small clusters of houses, winding lanes and rectangular fields create a finely detailed pattern.
The area is known in Japan for its ginkgo trees and the ginkgo nuts harvested from them. In autumn the golden leaves become a seasonal attraction, and trees stand around houses and shrines throughout the district. The planting once helped shelter homes from the strong winter winds that sweep across the plain.
