Sofia sits in a broad valley at the foot of Vitosha, whose northern slopes rise directly behind the southern districts. The city's layout radiates from a compact centre where old boulevards meet, then widens into planned neighbourhoods and large housing estates, all enclosed by a ring road that bends around the valley.
