Sumayl is the centre of a district in Duhok Governorate, in the Kurdistan Region of northern Iraq, a short drive west of the city of Duhok. The town stands on flat ground. From above, its streets form a fairly regular pattern of blocks, and newer neighbourhoods extend along the roads that lead out across the plain in several directions.
The land around it is largely agricultural, a broad lowland of fields that stays open for kilometres before mountain ridges rise to the north and east.
