Ţarţūs lies on the Syrian coast of the Mediterranean, on a strip of plain between the sea and the coastal mountains. The city faces west over the water. A long corniche follows the shore, port basins and breakwaters occupy a broad stretch of the waterfront, and the grid of newer districts extends inland across flat ground toward the hills.
The historic core was the Crusader town of Tortosa, and parts of its Templar fortifications survive around the old quarter by the sea, with houses built into the walls. The twelfth-century Cathedral of Our Lady of Tortosa, now a museum, stands nearby. A few kilometres offshore sits Arwad, Syria's only inhabited island, a small and densely built ancient town.
