Tongeren, in the province of Limburg, is widely regarded as the oldest town in Belgium, founded as the Roman settlement of Atuatuca Tungrorum. On a map, its historic centre is a compact oval of streets enclosed by a ring of boulevards. That ring follows the line of the old defences, and sections of both Roman and medieval walls still survive along it.
At the heart of the town stands the Basilica of Our Lady, and on the main square is a statue of Ambiorix, the Eburonian leader who resisted Julius Caesar.
