Übach-Palenberg lies in the far west of Germany, where the valley of the Wurm river forms part of the border with the Netherlands. The town is a union of several older villages, and on the map it still reads that way: separate clusters of streets connected by main roads, with green space and farmland between them.
For much of the twentieth century this was coal-mining country, and the town grew with its colliery. Mining has ended, but traces remain in the layout: former industrial sites turned into parks and green areas, worker housing laid out in regular rows, and the heap of spoil, now landscaped, rising above the surroundings.
