Umm as Summāq is a residential district in the western part of Amman, the Jordanian capital. Like much of Amman, it is built across hills, with valleys between them. West Amman developed later than the old downtown and is known for its larger houses and wider streets.
On a map, the district's streets follow the terrain closely. Roads wind along slopes, climb in switchbacks and meet at irregular junctions. Main avenues link the neighbourhood to the rest of west Amman. The street pattern is dense but never rigid, and in places the contour lines of the hills are almost visible in the layout.
