Vadodara, also known as Baroda, was the capital of the princely state ruled by the Gaekwad dynasty, and its map still reflects that role. Large palace grounds, parks and institutional campuses occupy open spaces within the city, giving the street pattern generous gaps. The Laxmi Vilas Palace, completed in 1890 for Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, stands in extensive grounds and is often described as four times the size of Buckingham Palace. The Maharaja Sayajirao University and the wide Sayaji Baug gardens, both named after the same ruler, add further open areas, so green and institutional blocks alternate with dense housing across the city.
