Vänersborg sits at the southern end of Lake Vänern, the largest lake in Sweden, where the Göta älv river leaves the lake and flows south toward Gothenburg. From above, the town lies between two waters: the lake bay of Vassbotten and the start of the river.
After a major fire in 1834, the centre was rebuilt in a regular grid, and the map still shows these straight blocks at the heart of the town. Around them, newer neighbourhoods spread along the shores and up the gentle slopes.
