Valdosta lies in south Georgia, close to the Florida border, and grew in the nineteenth century as a railroad town. On the map, a downtown grid centres on the courthouse, and rail lines cross the city in long, gentle diagonals. Valdosta State University occupies a campus north of downtown known for its Spanish Mission-style buildings, a large area of open space on the map.
