Wangyao is a town in the south-east of Gansu Province, in the hilly loess landscape of the upper Wei River basin. From above, the settlement follows a valley floor, where the flat ground leaves room for roads and buildings. This part of China lies on the western side of the Loess Plateau, a region of thick windblown soil that has been farmed for thousands of years.
