Wanparti, also written Wanaparthy, is the headquarters of Wanaparthy district in southern Telangana. It was once the seat of the Wanaparthy samasthanam, a local estate whose rulers built a palace in the town. The palace grounds now house an educational institution, and the old estate remains a large part of how people describe Wanaparthy's history.
From above, the town sits on the dry Deccan plateau, with a compact grid of streets and a few main roads running out across the fields. Small tanks and reservoirs, a familiar feature of Telangana, appear as irregular shapes around the edges. The Krishna river runs through the wider district to the south, and the rocky country between them is thinly settled.
