Weining lies high on the Wumeng plateau in western Guizhou, and on a map the town looks like a compact grid of streets set into a broad upland basin. The main roads follow the valley floor and then turn into winding routes that climb into the hills around it. Just beside the town lies Caohai, the Grass Sea, one of the largest natural freshwater lakes on the Guizhou plateau.
