Wendelstein is a market municipality in Middle Franconia, lying south of Nuremberg on the small Schwarzach river. Its map combines an old village centre, several outlying districts such as Röthenbach and Kleinschwarzenlohe, and newer residential streets that fill the space between them.
To the east and south the built-up area gives way to the wide pine forests that surround Nuremberg, and the river valley cuts a green band through the municipality. The historic Ludwig Canal, a nineteenth-century waterway linking the Danube and Main, runs through the wider area and adds an unusually straight line to the landscape.
