Xiaoweizhai lies in the Qiannan area of southern Guizhou, China, close to the city of Duyun. Guizhou is a land of limestone hills, and the landscape here is no exception. From above, the built area follows the flatter ground along the river and the valley floor, while steep, wooded slopes rise on either side and limit how far the streets can spread.
This terrain shapes everything on the map. Roads bend to follow the river and the contours of the hills. Newer residential blocks and older lanes are packed into whatever level land is available, and bridges link the two banks. Beyond the valley, the hills form an irregular pattern of ridges and hollows with only a few roads winding through them.
