Xingguo is the town at the centre of Qin'an County, in the Tianshui region of eastern Gansu. It lies in a river valley on the Loess Plateau, and the landscape shapes everything on the map. The town stretches along the valley floor, where the land is flat enough to build on.
The streets follow the valley, with main roads running parallel to the river and short cross streets between them. Beyond the town edge, the terrain rises into loess hills, and generations of farmers have cut the slopes into terraces. From above, these terraces look like layered contour lines.
