A river and the main road run side by side, and steep slopes rise on both sides, often cut by terraced fields and gullies.
In this part of Gansu, the land leaves little flat ground, so towns grow in long, thin shapes that follow the valleys. Farming depends on terraces carved into the hillsides, and small villages sit on ledges and side valleys linked by winding tracks.
