Yauri is the capital of Espinar Province in Peru's Cuzco Department, and it is often simply called Espinar. The town sits on the high Andean plateau, close to four thousand metres above sea level, where the ground opens into broad grassland rather than steep valleys. From above, the settlement looks like a tight cluster of blocks set down on a large, mostly empty surface.
The street pattern follows the usual layout of Andean provincial towns: a rectilinear grid of short blocks built around a central square, thinning out at the edges into looser plots and unpaved tracks.
