Yopal is the capital of Casanare, one of Colombia's eastern plains departments. It sits where the foothills of the Eastern Cordillera give way to the flat savannas of the Orinoquía, so a map of the city shows two different landscapes. The city has grown quickly since Casanare became a department in 1991 and oil was developed in the region.
