From above, Achères sits where the Oise flows into the Seine, and the two rivers set the town's edges. The Seine curves along the south and east. On the other side, the dense woodland of the Forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye makes a large blank area on the map, broken only by straight forest rides. Housing, rail yards and riverside land fill the space between.
The town has long been shaped by transport. Railway lines cross the commune in long parallel strokes, and Achères is a stop on the RER A, which connects it to central Paris. Near the water, the shoreline breaks into basins, embankments and flat industrial plots. On a plain monochrome print these read as sharp geometric shapes set against the softer curves of the rivers.

A large state forest borders the town to the south. Its straight hunting rides cut through the empty space in thin lines, a strong contrast to the dense streets nearby.
Rail corridors
Several rail lines, including the RER A, run across Achères in long parallel bands. They divide the town into clear sectors and show its role as a rail junction.
